Capturing Maine: Rozanna Patane, Martha Hesse, and Lewis Woodaman

NOVEMBER – DECEMBER 2024

York Public Library’s November and December art exhibit, “Capturing Maine” features the work of painters Rozanna Patane and Martha Hesse and sculptor Lewis Woodaman. The show will be on display November 1 through December 27, with an artists reception on Tuesday, November 12 from 5-7 PM.

The three artists have over a half century of combined years in York. They each love the natural world and all Maine has to offer. That love is reflected in their art.

ROZANNA PATANE paints with both acrylics and oils and also likes to sketch. Although she attended the Art Institute of Boston, she took time off to raise a daughter and to pursue a career in finance. She returned to painting and is now building a studio in her home in York. In her own words: “I grew up in Maine so, of course, the natural world has always infused my work. I’m especially interested in the elusive intersection of nature’s beauty and the abstract form in painting. Recently I have focused on how color and light unfold in the natural forms we’re lucky enough to see around us every day.”

MARTHA HESSE paints with both oils and pastels. After attending the Rhode Island School of Design, she spent over 25 years as Art Director in Denver and Miami. She was always interested in painting but it wasn’t until she moved to York 20 years ago that she pursued it seriously, inspired by the beauty all around her. In her own words: “Painting gives me a feeling of personal expression. I love the whole process – from composing the image and mixing the right color to ensuring my brushstroke conveys the right feel for what I am seeing. I started experimenting with pastels and found them to be fun and evocative in a different way than oils.”

LEWIS WOODAMAN is a sculptor. He began carving when he was a boy growing up on Lake Winnipesaukee. He majored in Botany in college but spent a great deal of time in the Art department. He moved to Maine in the early seventies and took full advantage of the amazing resource of wood and stone all around him. From cutting down the tree to the finished product, he uses hammer, chisel and sandpaper to find the form that lives inside. In his own words: “Anything that’s three dimensional, you have to deal with the space around it and create a positive and negative space at the same time. I don’t know what’s behind my pieces. I guess it’s hard to describe it. If I could, I’d be poet.”

“Capturing Maine” will be on display during the months of November and December in the library’s upper level, lobby, and display cases.  

York Public Library is located at 15 Long Sands Road, York, Maine, and is open Monday-Thursday 10am-7pm, Friday 10am-5pm, and Saturday 10am-2pm.

About York Public Library Exhibits

When you stroll into the York Public Library (YPL) to find a book, read a magazine, work at a computer, or attend a meeting or program, you will undoubtedly discover more than you expected. In fact, you will have an opportunity to see major exhibitions by some of the area’s most talented artists, past and present. The art is displayed throughout the Library.

The exhibits at the York Public Library include a broad range of art and represent artists from York, Eliot, the Berwicks, Ogunquit and the Portsmouth area. The common denominator is the quality of the work. Exhibits run the gamut and have included sculpture, fiber art, and traditional, abstract, and contemporary art. Our goal is to reach not only those who have a strong interest in art but also patrons who may or may not visit museums and galleries on a regular basis.

One of the highlights on the calendar is the “Student Art Show” held each year in April. The show features art created by young people in York from kindergarten through high school and is designed to foster excellence in art for generations to come.  

Every year the Library mounts a group show called “Community Collects”.  This show features the work of one or more well-known local artists from the past. Collectors from the area generously lend pieces from their personal collections during this three-month long exhibit.

The York Public Library (YPL) Art Committee

The YPL Art Committee, composed of a small group of volunteers, selects and organizes six exhibits throughout the year. Committee members are knowledgeable in the field and familiar with the reputations of artists in our area.  An Opening Reception is hosted by the Committee for each exhibit during which the artists are invited to give an informal talk about their creative process.
