This week, York Public Library encourages all community members to visit their library in person or online to explore and access services and programs. YPL offers a wide array of programs and resources that are available in person or from the comfort of home, including hoopla, Libby, and cloudlibrary.
April 3-9, 2022 is National Library Week, a time to highlight the essential role libraries, librarians and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. The theme for this year’s National Library Week is “Connect with Your Library,” which promotes the idea that libraries are places to get connected to technology by using broadband, computers and other resources. Libraries also offer opportunities to connect with media, programs, art, and ideas in addition to books. Most importantly, libraries also connect community members to each other.
Libraries of all types continue to go above and beyond to keep their communities connected by expanding resources and embracing inclusion in their programming, resources and collections. York Public Library is supporting the community with services such as wi-fi access, technology help and instruction, diverse programming including our Climate Speaker Series, ongoing art exhibits, children’s programming, and much more.
This National Library Week, the public can show their appreciation and support for libraries by visiting their library in person or online, following them on social media and using the hashtag #NationalLibraryWeek.
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is an annual observance by ALA and libraries across the country each April. National Library Week celebrations include the release of ALA’s State of America’s Libraries Report, April 4; National Library Workers Day, April 5; National Library Outreach Day, April 6; Take Action for Libraries Day, April 7; and the celebration of School Library Month throughout April.
We will be joined in celebrating by Molly Shannon, multiple Emmy-nominated and Spirit Award-winning actress, comedian, and legendary Saturday Night Live cast member, and this year’s honorary chair of National Library Week.
“I am so honored to serve as honorary chair of National Library Week for 2022. My mom was a librarian. She encouraged kids to read. So, the work of librarians and libraries has such a special place in my heart,” Shannon said. “Libraries are places where communities connect—to things like broadband, computers, programs and classes, books, movies, video games, and more. But most importantly, libraries connect us to each other. Supporting National Library Week in this role allows me to connect to my mother’s memory and all the librarians out there. Thank you for everything you do.”
