York, Maine is a picturesque and charming coastal town located just across the Piscataqua River from Portsmouth, NH. With a combined population of nearly 14,000, the area swells to approximately 30,000 with the influx of summer visitors.

York is home to 3 beaches; 2 lighthouses; and Mt. Agamenticus. In addition to quaint shops, art galleries, and world-class restaurants galore, the area is full of opportunities to hike, bike, and camp; sail, kayak, or canoe; surf, swim, or simply sit on the beach.

LIBRARY ASSISTANT (PART-TIME)

York Public Library is seeking two friendly and dependable Library Assistants to staff the Library’s  public service areas. The winning candidates must possess excellent customer service and interpersonal skills; be technologically savvy and detail-oriented; and able to perform duties effectively. Library Assistants will be on the main circulation desk, but include occasional shifts in youth services as staffing needs dictate. 

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred. A high school diploma (or equivalent) and applicable work experience may be substituted. Experience in Sierra library software is highly desirable. 

This position is for 10-15 hours per week, with additional shifts available as staffing needs warrant. The schedule will include 1-2 evenings per week and 1-2 Saturdays per month. Compensation starting range is $18.00-$20.54 per hour.

Library Assistant - Position Description

Essential Job Functions:

  • Greets and assists Library patrons with effective and welcoming customer service skills.
  • Effectively performs all circulation functions including checking items in and out; updating patron records; creating cards for new library patrons.
  • Enforces Library Conduct and Borrowing policies when appropriate, informing administration of infractions when necessary.
  • Helps patrons search for and request interlibrary loans using the online catalog.
  • Assists patrons with library equipment, including photocopiers, computers, printers.
  • Assists patrons with general troubleshooting questions and using the online catalog, internet, and online resources.
  • Maintains confidentiality of library records.
  • Collects and processes charges for damaged items, out of town cards, or printing.
  • Answers phones in a courteous and professional manner; calls patrons regarding requested, overdue, or billed items.
  • Answers basic questions and refers more complex questions to appropriate staff as needed.
  • Assists in collection maintenance including shelving, shifting, and organizing.
  • Processes library materials with labels and protective covers.
  • Supports library programming independently or as part of a team.
  • Performs other duties as necessary.

  • Good clerical and keyboarding skills are required.
  • Comfortable using computers, the internet, digital resources, and online platforms to perform circulation functions and assist patrons with general troubleshooting and the use of online resources.
  • Good knowledge of current office practices and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze situations accurately and to adopt an effective course of action.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
  • Library skills sufficient to accomplish the duties listed above, “transferable” skills, or the ability to learn those skills. In particular, the ability to learn the use of the Dewey classification system, and other library procedures is required.
  • Creativity and artistic ability is a plus.
  • Sense of humor is essential.

Job Specifications:

  • Education and Experience:  A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred. A high school diploma (or equivalent) and applicable work experience may be substituted. Experience in Sierra library software is highly desirable. 
  • Physical Requirements:  Performs duties under typical library conditions.  Position requires frequent physical effort, such as carrying books (20-30 lbs), pushing book carts (up to 150 lbs), bending, stretching, grasping, etc. to retrieve library materials.  Able to view computer screens for extended time periods and to operate computers, telephones, photocopiers, printers and other office equipment.
  • Reports to: Assistant Director (Head of Adult Services) or Head of Youth Services
  • Schedule: 10-15 hours a week. This position will include evening hours and Saturdays in rotation. While we will strive to provide a predictable schedule, flexibility is a must.
  • Compensation:  $18.00 to $20.54 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
