Model commitment to energy efficiency and transparency by displaying actual energy goals, actions, and progress
Goals:
- Articulate energy metric for tracking, set operational goals
- Post information on website about progress–past, present, future
- Provide public updates about progress and library actions
We’ll measure our energy usage over time, using data from 2016-present with notes indicating where HVAC improvements were made and how that is reflected in the data. We can regularly post updates on what we’re doing to further improve (applying for solar grants, installing heat pumps, etc.) Goal of building transparency and community support for important work.
Complete 25% of the action items from the energy audit
Goals:
- Identify source of funding for priorities
- RFP and hire contractors to do work
We will start work on projects that will lead to overall improvements for library energy usage. It may not be 25% of the audit, because so much is related, but we will establish an intention to make it happen. Goals: Regular check-ins with the Building & Grounds and/or Energy Committee to get it all moving forward. Identify grants for sustainability, capital improvements, or other incentives.
Differentiate library spaces and capabilities for greater programming opportunities
Goals:
- SWOT analysis of all library spaces
- YA space quick refresh
- Identify gaps in how we are able to provide community engagement to support creating list of issues and priorities for consultant
We will determine what we can do with the space that we currently have, and what we need to make it better. We may identify short term solutions that will help cover the gap before future renovations can take place. By taking time on staff day to brainstorm with people who have different perspectives, we will gain valuable feedback on what we need to view in other libraries and prioritize for any future consultant work.
Hire a consultant to deliver a phased plan on the best spatial layout of the library, starting with the youth services floor
Goals:
- Reach out to Maine State Library for guidance and support with renovations
- Create list of staff issues and priorities
- Begin to identify funding opportunities
- Field trips to libraries who are happy with their renovations
- Identify three consultants and solicit proposals
We need to identify what we want to ask of a consultant and determine who will be the best people to talk to. By visiting other libraries we can see what worked well in different spaces, as well as discuss with actual library staff how their processes went and what they’d do differently next time. Through this process we can receive guidance on what to look for in a consultant and hopefully connect with a good person.
Create an accessible digital presence for local history, newspaper, and genealogical resources
Goals:
- Identify tool to support digitization of local materials
- Integrate digitized newspapers into website
- Create internship opportunity with high school students assisting in digitization work
We will make it easier for people to find and access the resources we already have, by organizing and digitizing what is currently available in print. We will reach out to the Maine State Library to join in on their digital archive project. We will utilize the funding provided to incorporate local students into the York digitization, first by designing a plan that works within our limitations, and then by reaching out to the high school local history class to get buy-in.
Provide monthly technology training opportunities for York residents
Goals:
- Work to offer new technologies (and training) as part of Library of Things
We want to make it easy for anyone who needs it to get a basic to intermediate level of technical help when walking into the library. We want to help people feel as comfortable as they wish with the new technology that is available, and we want to allow access to new technologies without the expensive individual consumer cost.

Create website to provide central hub for town organizations working in the realms of Climate and Sustainability
Completed Goals:
- Identify and reach out to Town groups to build partnerships
- Create programming on topics related to Climate and Sustainability
- Build webpage with program archive, local resources, and information
We worked with any and all town groups that wanted to partner with us. We are currently working with York’s Climate Action plan team to present 10 programs related to climate change, working with WRAD on Earth Day programming, and working with the Recycling Committee on an Artist Visit to see how plastics can be upcycled into art. We have a website currently promoting the climate series, but which can make way for additional programming and resources after this current series ends. Goal: Community involvement and collaboration.
