Unwrap a Good Book: Our Staff’s December Reading Recommendations

How to Read a Book by Monica Woods
A lovely gem of a book. Wood’s novel focuses on three characters whose stories are told in alternating chapters. Harriet is a retired English teacher who leads a book club at a women’s prison. Violet is one of the women in her group; she is incarcerated for vehicular homicide. Frank is the husband of the woman Violet killed. Violet is released from prison and the story unfolds from there. The book is about friendship, redemption, kindness, and the power of books. Five stars, highly recommend!

Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay
If you want a little creepy this Christmas, check out Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay. Find out why this fictional film was never released to the public, and why it shouldn’t be remade…

Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosch
An adult graphic novel by Allie Brosh containing both superbly funny drawings and situations that are simultaneously hysterical, poignant, and deep. She covers everything from cake and dogs to depression and mental illness. I read this book years ago and laughed out loud so much and so hard that I interrupted my kids sleeping for multiple nights. They kept shouting from their beds, WHAT IS SO FUNNY?!?! Highly recommend 🙂

All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker
This book is probably the best book I have read in a long time. It has a little bit of everything- it’s a thriller, it’s a mystery, it’s a love story. Whitaker weaves a narrative that spans decades- and follows the lives of Patch and Saint in their small midwestern town. A must read.
